Back to School Safety Checklist: Healthy Relationships Under Title IX

As you start to plan for the new school year, it’s important to keep in mind the safety of your students. One way you can do that is to help them identify the characteristics of healthy relationships and their rights under Title IX, which prohibit sexual violence, bullying and more.

Bullying & Domestic Violence

According to a study published in the journal “Pediatrics”, “men who recalled being frequent bullies in school were four times more likely to physically abuse their partner than those who reported never bullying in school.” The study also found a link between "bullying others at school and perpetration of IPV (intimate partner violence)." The report concluded that “Individuals who are likely to perpetuate abusive behaviors against others may do so across childhood

What is Bystander Intervention?

Bystander intervention is when someone who isn’t directly involved in a potentially harmful situation steps up to positively change what happens. Potentially harmful situations include sexual harassment or assault, bullying, or binge drinking. It’s easy to stand by and not help someone in a difficult situation, even if you know something isn’t right. But it’s up to those nearby to stand up for others who can’t or won’t stand up for themselves.

In 2020, about 1 in 5 high school students in the United States reported using e-cigarettes in the past month. 3.6 million young people are currently using e-cigarettes — exceeding traditional cigarettes.
