National Prevention Week 2019

This week, May 12th-18th is National Prevention Week. This initiative, started by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, aims to increase public awareness of, and action around, mental health and/or substance use disorders.

National Prevention Week has 3 main goals:

  1. Increase Community Involvement: Raise awareness about substance abuse and mental health issues within communities
  2. Foster Partner Engagement: Foster engagement and collaboration between federal agencies and national organizations with the same goals
  3. Share Resources: Provide quality substance use prevention and mental health promotion resources and programs

Additionally, National Prevention Week focuses on a specific prevention topic each day:

  • Monday, May 13: Preventing Prescription and Opioid Drug Misuse
  • Tuesday, May 14: Preventing Underage Drinking and Alcohol Misuse
  • Wednesday, May 15: Preventing Illicit Drug Use and Youth Marijuana Use
  • Thursday, May 16: Preventing Youth Tobacco Use
  • Friday, May 17: Preventing Suicide

National Prevention Week occurs in May because substances are most often used for the first time during June and July. This makes May a good time to reboot prevention efforts. Schools can remind students as they’re heading into the summer break the dangers of substance abuse and how to get help if you find yourself in trouble.

Developing a healthy style of communication is important to most people and considered a life skill that many desire. This skill can be developed at an early age and many educators are now making it a point to foster communication skills to help their students. 

Unfortunately, we sometimes see younger people who show signs of unhealthy communication that manifest in the forms of unhealthy relationships and anger.


If you are seeing these signs, know that there is something you can do to correct it.
